Description

In this lesson, students will be engaged in third person -s, negative and question forms. They will learn present forms of negative and interrogatives and develop their receptive skills in the same context. The lesson starts with teacher asking the students complete the true/false statements exercise as a lead-in. This is followed by grammar exercise and questions/answers part about Andrew. Students will be also asked to answer some questions about Claudia.

Main Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about Andrew Johnson

Procedure

Stage 1 (Lead-in) (3-5 minutes) • To introduce the lesson through questions about the text and elicit what they remember about the topic based on their previous lesson knowledge

Teacher shows the pictures of Andrew Johnson and asks SS to recall what they know about his life. Students are expected to give answers as to the subject person and teacher gives chance to SS to join the lead-in part of the lesson.

Stage 2 (True/False Statements) (3-5 minutes) • To find out if SS remember specific informations from the text and provide S-S interaction pattern

Teacher gives SS handouts in which true/false statements are placed. Students work in pairs and compare answer with each other. Teacher monitors and pick up points where SS have trouble and provides feedback afterwards.

Stage 3 (Introduction) (5-10 minutes) • To introduce SS to present forms of positive, negative and interrogatives through the lines about Andrew.

Students are asked to work with a partner on each line about Andrew. After the first listening, SS compare answers in pairs, teacher monitors and provides feedback afterwards.

Stage 4 (Grammar and Pronunciation) (5-10 minutes) • To teach SS positive, negative and question forms of present simple tense and practise the pronunciation of particular words.

Teacher reviews, models and drills third person -s and introduces, models and drills negative and question forms. Backchain for longer utterances. Teacher provides some other examples concerning the grammer subject and ask students a few questions in the same context. Students are also asked to listen and practise the pronunciation of does and doesn't. Teacher models and drills.

Stage 5 ( (5-10 minutes) • To make predictions of questions and answers, work in pairs and compare answers with each other and provide a S-S based pattern of learning.

Students are expected to work with a partner to first make predictions of exercise two and then compare answers with each other. Teacher asks students to listen, monitors and provides feedback.

Stage 6 (Claudia Luke) (3-5 minutes) • To provide a controlled speaking exercise and find out what SS remember about the text of Claudia Luke

Teacher asks students to look at the picture of Claudia and recalls their knowledge through speaking exercise. Students are expected to work in pairs and ask questions about Claudia Luke. Teacher monitors and asks some of them to tell their questions and answers. If there is enough time, teacher asks SS to make role-playing exercise through the text of Claudia Luke.
