Main Aims

  • To practise listening for details and specific information

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practise speaking in the context of "Life Stories"

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher greets the students and tries to remember their names. She introduces the noun "First Lady" to establish a smooth transition to pre- listening tasks. She tries to encourage the students to talk about the current first ladies of the world. The teacher distributes the worksheets, asks the students to look at the photos and comment, "Who are they..." etc. The teacher asks them to read the information box to make them guess what is being told.

Pre- Listening (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The teacher checks if the students knew the words in the box. The teacher asks the students to read to guess which verb belongs to each gap. (ex. 2A) Instruction is checked, "Do you write?" "No."

While Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Listening for specific information. (ex. 2B) The teacher asks the students to listen to the text and complete the sentences. After the activity the teacher asks the learners if they need to listen again. The learners check their answers in pairs. Whole class feedback is conducted. Past participle forms of the words in the box are introduced. Answer key is given.

While Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Reading for gist. (ex. 3A) Students are asked to listen and number the events in the order they hear them by using the flash cards (Pair work). Answer key is provided. Students are asked if they need to listen or not. Listening for details. (ex. 3B) Students are asked to listen again and write the year when each event happened (Pair work). Answer key is provided.

Post Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Semi- controlled practice. (ex. 4) Students are asked to think of a person's life; themselves, famous people, family, friends etc. They are asked to talk about the life of that person using the ideas in the book. They prepare for the activity in pairs.
