To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a vidoe about a tribe in China called women's kingdom
Subsidiary Aims

To provide fluency speaking practice in a the same context of the vidoe
Procedure (34-45 minutes)
- Greet students - Play hang-man game with students to elicit the word "TRIBE" and set the lesson context
- Show the students the title of the video accompanied by a picture to help them predict the topic - Listen to their predictions but do not share the right answer with them - Write key words of their predictions on the white board - Let the students answer the following questions in pairs : Do you need a man in your life ? why ? why not ? Do you need a woman in your life ? why ? why not ?
- Tell the students that they are going to watch a short video titled The Women's Kingdom - Give students a hand-out /HO1/ that has an initial gist listening task - Ask students some ICQ's such as : Are we going to understand every single word in the video ? No Are we going to translate anything now ? No - Start the video when students are ready and let them watch watch the whole video - Then have the students answer the initial task before checking their answers in pairs - Share the answer with students - Ask them for justifications : Why they believe that answer is correct Can they remember any part of the video as a proof ? - Give the students a worksheet /HO2/ for them to work out the meaning of some vocabulary - Let them check in pairs before having the answer key - Drill the vocabulary quickly and have students repeat individually if needed
- Give students a hand-out /HO3/ which has the second detailed task - Tell that they we are going to watch the video again to answer more detailed questions - Let them have an idea about the questions before they start watching the video - After watching it, let them do task 2 and then check their answers together - Give them an answer key to check and ask them comprehension questions to see how they have found the answers
- Ask students to see who likes and who does not like this culture - Regroup students - Put students in pairs/groups and let them answer the following question : In your opinion, what are the advantages and disadvantages of living in this place ? - Listen and monitor and take notes to give W/C feedback later
