Description

In this lesson students are being introduced to the context of "Living Abroad". The teacher talks about her personal experiences of living abroad. She shows a slide show about the small town Famagusta and the big city Istanbul. New vocabulary items are pre- taught this way. The teacher drills the words with the students. Students look at the photos in their books to guess the context, then read the text. A matching activity is given to the students. In the next activity students re- read the text again to underline the differences and the similarities between their city and those cities. In the last activity, the students are asked to imagine where they would like to live.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher greets the students. The teacher talks about her experiences of living abroad. She shows her slide show and talks about her small town she used to live and the big city that she lives now. During the show, the big city and the small town are compared and the new vocabulary is introduced. The pre- teaching of the vocabulary is done this way. New vocabulary is drilled and consept questions are asked. At the end of the activity, the students are asked to discuss the similarities and the differences of the mentioned cities.

Pre-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Students work in pairs and look at the photos in the book and discuss. They are asked to answer 3 different questions. Time is given them to discuss.

Reading for gist (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students read the article to check their answers. Feedback is conducted. Content questions are asked.

Reading for specific information (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students are asked to match the sentences with the places. They check their answers as a group. Feedback is conducted. Answer key is given.

Reading for detail (3-4 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students re- read the article to underline the two things that are the same in their city and to circle two things that are different.

Post-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned.

Students compare their ideas and discuss the differences. Students are working in pairs to check their ideas. Students are re-paired. Feedback is conducted.

If time activity (2-3 minutes) • To reinforce the understanding of the topic.

Students are asked to imagine where they would like to live. Students compare their answers with their friends.
