Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a speaking in a conversation in the context "habbits in the past".

Procedure

Lead-in (6 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to clarify the vocabulary from the previous lesson.

-Greet the SS and continue the context of "upbringing" from the previous lesson. -Elicit the word "ubringing". Ask CCQ. Write the following sentence on the board: *My parents brought me up in Bulgaria." *The tense is present or past? *The verb is "parents" or "brought"? *The verb is regular or irregular? *How is the present form of brought? *How did my parents raise me up? *So...... My ....... (complete) - How do you combine "bring up"? -Let SS do their own sentences about "upbringing" -Project their pictures on the board. Give the HO with the pictures. *CCQ - Is he American? Is she Japanese? Is she 28 years old? -Listen for gist ex. 2 (R.2.5) from the previous lesson according to elicit from the SS what they remember about the two characters, Rafael and Mi-Sun.

Reading for the gist (5 minutes) • To set lesson context, to introduce the lesson and engage the students

-First give the task then the text!!! Project the reading part ex.1 p.20 on the board. -SS scan the paragraph individually and underline verbs with "used to" and "would/'d". -Elicit the first example and write it on the board. ex. "We used to practice..." -Then check their answers with their pairs. *ICQ - Are you going to read in details? Or just scan the verbs? -Are going to read with your pair? Or individually? -Ask if there are unknown words. occasionally (adv.) - happening sometimes but often. Ex. We occasionally meet for a drink. to tell off (v.) - to scold. (use gesture) Ex. The teacher told me off for not doing my homework. to hang out (v.) - informal - to spend a lot of time at a particular place or with particular people. ex. They hang out together. -Check the answers with pairs then with WG. Answers: We used to practise./I used to feel/We used to play/I used to love/My dad would tell me off/We'd go inside.

Focus on Language (18-20 minutes) • To provide SS find out the grammatical usage on their own.

-Project the HO#2 "Grammar Box". Give the instructions. -SS work individually and complete the rules by giving examples from ex.1 *ICQ - Are going to work in pairs? -Are you going to speak the examples? -SS do peer check. -WG check the answers. Intivite them to write the answers on the board. Concept: used to and would express a discontinued habit. They highlight the fact that the person does not do this any more in the present. (reference:Concept Checking and Timelines, Graham Workman, Chadburn Publishing) *CCQ about "used to" and "would" : Give example from the context. *Ex. We used to play in the streets. *Do we play in the streets now? - No *Did we play in the streets in the past? -Yes *Did we play in the streets once or many times? - Many times *Ex: My dad would tell me off if I argued with my mum about piano practice. *Do my dad tell me off now? - No *Did he tell me off in the past? - Yes *Did he tell me off once or many times? - many times -Draw on the board the timeline for both forms. *Make SS notice the form of used to and would : -used to + infinitive (V1) : We used to practise. negative form : We didn't use to practise. Q form: Did we use to practise? Pronunciation : /ˈjuːst tuː/ -S+would+infinitive (V1) : My dad would tell me off negative form : My dad wouldn't tell me off Q form: Would my dad tell me off? Pronunciation : would /wʊd/ we'd /wiːd/ -Focus SS attention on the examples part 2 and highlight: *anymore always somes after the verb. ex.I don't practice the piano anymore. *still comes before most verbs, but after be: ex.I still feel ashamed if I argue with my parents. I am still at school.

Controlled Practice (3 minutes) • To allow SS to practice the form and usage according to clarify the concept.

-SS work individually to complete the sentences about themselves when they were children/teenagers. -Give the task before the text. -Circulate and check SS are using "used to" and "didn't use to". ICQ- Are you going to work together? -Are you going to speak?

Semi-Controlled Practice (5 minutes) • To allow SS to practice the form and usage according to clarify the concept.

-Give the task before the text. -SS work in pairs and discuss the questions. -Make them use the questions in ex.2 p.21 ICQ - Are you going to work individually? -Are going to write your anwers? -Finish the activity by asking SS to report on any surprises.

Free Practice (8 minutes) • To provide an effective feedback of what we have learnt during the lesson

-SS write a short description of their "upbringing/childhood". Limit the number of the sentences. For instance, 5 sentences max. Give SS a few minutes to think about what they are going to write. Hightlight that they should use "used to/would" ICQ - Are you going to speak with your friend? -Are you going to write a loooong paragraph? -Check SS if they have difficulties with using the form "used to/would". -(If time is enough)After a while, when they finish, take their texts and put them in different point round the classroom. -Tell them to pick up a text, read it and try to guess the owner.
