To provide fluency speaking practice in a talk about rules and obligations in the context of giving advice to a foreign visitor.
Procedure (27-40 minutes)
Show two pictures on Slide 1 of the PPT file. Ask Ss what each picture shows? Put them in pairs to discuss their ideas. Monitor. Get feedback in WC. Elicit these two responses: 1. visiting a home in Canada 2. Having a hot spring bath in Japan. Give Ss the Prediction activity. Ss do the activity individually. Ss check in groups. Monitor.
Pre-teach vocabulary through elicitation. Check understanding through CCQs. Play the listening audio. Ss check their predictions in groups. Give the key. Ss compare their answers with they key.
Give the matching activity to Ss to be completed individually. Ss check in pairs. Give Ss the key. Check the answers with WC.
Write Yes/No on the board. Ss find the expressions that are used to give advice. Ss check in pairs. Monitor. General feedback from the class. Write on the board.
Show Ss three pictures on PPT Slide 2. Put them in groups. Each group chooses one of the pictures/situations. Give them the Speaking Task Handout. Ss talk to each other and write three pieces of advice about their situations. Each group tells their pieces of advice to the other two groups. The other groups show agreement or disagreement. This goes on until all groups have reported their answers.
