Subsidiary Aims
-
To review and give Ss practice in present tenses – simple, perfect and continuous.
Procedure (29-46 minutes)
I will show the students my family tree and I will introduce different people in my family. I will tell the students to ask some questions about my family members and I will give short answers. Then I will ask them to make similar family trees individually, then show it to their partners and talk briefly about their families.
Ask Ss to read the short text in Listening Ex 1. Ss discuss in pair whether they agree or disagree with the statement in the text. Monitor. Take some general FB. Pre-teach vocabulary- using examples:
Tell the Ss to listen to a talk on how to find out about your family tree. Show the slide containing two questions. Tell the Ss to focus on listening for the answers to these questions. Ss peer-check. Ask Ss to share their answers with the class.
Divide Ss into groups of three. Show the slide and tell them to come up with two ways for researching into their family tree. Monitor. Ask Ss to share their ideas. Write them on the board. Ss listen to the audio. Compare the answers to the Ss ideas.
Put the sentences in Grammar ex 1 onto strips of paper. First get Ss to identify the tenses of the bolded verbs. – Ss can do this in pairs/small groups. Also put the uses on Ex2 on strips of paper. Ss match these uses with the examples. – Check and deal with any questions/problems
If time- Ask Ss the following questions about family history: 1. Have you ever searched your family history? 2. Which of the two ways (asking a family member or using the internet) you prefer for searching your family history?
