Description

In this lesson students learn and practice vocabulary they will hear in a lecture in the next lesson by matching synonyms, finding parts of speech of these words and finding the correct prepositions that are used with the given words in the context of Public Health-Global Epidemic.

Main Aims

  • To provide review and clarification of of commonly used words they will hear in the lecture in the next lesson in the context of healthy lifestyle

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about wellness in the context of healthy lifestyle

Procedure

1.Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • to introduce the context and activate schemata

Project the warmer PPT. SS look at a picture of a girl eating hamburgers and discuss the problem in pairs. SS then answer projected Qs with their partners. They watch a video about obesity and note-down the reasons they hear in the video. Peer-check is done. SS have a brief WC discussion. Later they go to page 82 and they have a discussion about their health in pairs in ex. A.

2.Listening (7-8 minutes) • to provide listening for gist by a conversation on wellness

SS listen to a conversaton in ex.B and discuss what they heard in pairs. SS listen again but this time they answer the questions. They compare their answers.

3.Post listening discussion (3-4 minutes) • to provide free speaking practice in context

SS change partners to answer Qs in ex. C in pairs.

4.Matching Vocabulary with the Meaning (13-14 minutes) • to familiarize SS with some key content words used in the lecture

Pass out the vocabulary cards to each group. SS work in groups of 4 to decide the parts of speeches of the words they receive. SS replace the phrases which are used in sentences with the words they have on cards. Groups first see the sentences through OHT and they have 30 sec. to raise the card with the right word. First they see the word then they show the part of speech. The group with most correct answers win. CCQs are asked to clarify the meaning. Words are drilled chorally and individually.

5. Preposition match (8-9 minutes) • to provide practice of collocations and improve fluency

Give out the cards. Write the prepositions on WB in a random order. SS work in pairs to match the correct preposition for each gap. 4 SS from different groups write the answer key on the board and WC checks their answers.

6. Vocabulary Extension-If time activity (7-8 minutes) • to recycle the vocabulary SS have learned

Give out the extra practice HO. SS complete the second section of the vocabulary activity in which there are halves of sentences to match. They compare their answers in pairs. WC FB is given along with delayed FB to speaking fluency practice.
