Friday 27th of March
Intermediate - B1 level

Description

In this lesson students practice their reading skills in the context of shop and shoppers through a reading text about common food products people in England buy from the supermarket. The lesson starts with a discussion about what the students normally buy in the supermarket. This is followed by pre-teaching vocabulary through the methods of realia, anecdote and picture. Then students will first read for gist and answer questions about the text. Than students read for detail and do a listing exercise. Finally there is a speaking for fluency activity through 3 discussion questions on typical food items in England and Turkey.

Materials

Abc Reading text 'Checking Out the Check Out'
Abc Exercises 1-2-3

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and reading practice using a text about buying food in the supermarket in the context of shop and shoppers
  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about buying food in the supermarket in the context of shop and shoppers

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of typical foods from the supermarket in the UK and Turkey

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start the lesson with an anecdote: I have traveled in many countries in the world and one thing I like to do when I'm traveling is going to a supermarket. It tells you a lot about the culture. A friend of mine who worked as an engineer in Istanbul for seven years returned to Holland and thought it was very funny that every cucumber and every aubergine was packaged in plastic! In Turkey you buy a bag of tomatoes or peppers, because people make lots of food and then how buying bottled water in quantities of 19 or 5 liters was really interesting for me as in Holland we only drink tap water. I will refer back to Meric' vocab of quantifiers.

Pre-Reading/Vocab (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible and to teach them a few words

Through a variety of methods (anecdote, mime, realia and picture) ss will learn a few words to prepare them for the reading text. Not all words that are possibly difficult for B1 ss will be addressed as to maintain the necessary challenge level. We will drill the word Mediterranean

While-Reading/Gist (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Exercise 1: Ss will be given instructions on what to read for in the first half of the text. I will use CCQ to check instructions. After that the questions will be handed out (folded), then I will hand out the reading text and students will read. They will check their answers in pairs. I will ask FB as a w/c activity by nominating. There is the added element of speaking as a sub-skill in this exercise.

While-Reading/Detail (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with reading exercise for detail

Exercise 2: Ss will be given instructions to read the text again, now the whole text and then answer questions 1, 2 and 3 in pairs. I will using pyramiding to check answers. Pairs will be merged to groups of 4 to check answers for Q1. Then groups are merged to form two groups to check for answers Q2 and 3. Eventually I will write the list on the w/b.

Post-Reading/Fluency speaking (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to personalize and respond to the text and use the vocab that they've learned

Exercise 3: After the reading exercises ss will have a chance to practice fluency speaking by discussing the differences between the typical Turkish and British shopping basket in pairs. They must try and use the vocabulary from Meric and this lesson. In groups of 3 they will write food items including a quantifier on ten small pieces of paper that according to them are in a typical Turkish shopping basket and they come forward to put it into my shopping basket. Then in NEW groups of 3 they will discuss the changes of eating habits in Turkey and I will ask a few of them to share w/c. Followed by what they think will be in a shopping basket in 20 years from now in groups of 3 and I will ask a few what they think w/c. I will elicit a few words that they didn't know to describe their favorite or standard food items as FB

Extra activity (5-10 minutes) • If there is time left they can do more speaking practicing the new vocabulary from the vocab and reading lessons

The ss have another opportunity to practice their fluency speaking and vocabulary from Meric' lesson and my lesson. Ss invite me over for dinner. What food will they prepare for me and what will they need to buy in the supermarket in order to do this? They will work in groups of 4. Use 'a box of, a carton of, a bottle of'. This exercise can be extended to a mind mapping vocab exercise about different types of food; vegetables, fruits, etc. as a w/c activity
