Description

In this lesson, Students read a text about social service. The lesson starts with a brainstorming activity which activates their schemeta and prepares them for further reading activities. This lesson includes pre-teach vocabulary, pre-reading ,while-reading and post-reading activities. The lesson ends up with a preductive speaking activity.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, detailed, deduction and inference reading practice using a text about Mandatory Social Services at School

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice using the words within the article.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher introduces himself to the class. Teacher projects some pictures of people doing community service. Teacher asks students, ''what are these people doing ''. Teacher elicits all answers from students and writes them on the board. Teacher writes social service on the board and projects a question on the board. Teacher asks students to work in pairs and discuss the question. Teacher gives one minute to students and elicits some answers from students.

Pre-teach vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • to prepare the students for the reading , helping them understand the article better.

Teacher hands out a worksheet and asks students to work in groups and match the words with their definitions. Teacher gives 5 minutes and takes whole class feedback using an quizlet matching activity on the board. Teachers provides the answer key.

Pre-Reading (3-4 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher asks the students to skim the article and decide what the article mostly about. Teachers gives two minutes and elicits answers from the students. Teacher says this article is mostly about a volunteer program at Bowie High School.

While-Reading (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with specific and more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Teacher gives instructions and asks students to read the article in detail and answer the questions. Teacher gives ten minutes. Teacher asks early finishers to help other friends in the classroom.Teacher elicits the answers and also asks evidence from the article . Teacher finally provides an answer key at the end of the activity.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Teacher separates the class into two. Teachers gives instructions and hands out speaking activity questions. Teacher asks students to stand up. Group A and Group B stand face-to-face. Students asks questions in return. When they finish discussing all the questions, they swap their partners. Teacher monitors the students and takes notes about their mistakes. When the time is up, teacher asks students to sit down.

Error-correction (2-3 minutes) • to correct students mistakes on form, pronunciation and meaning

Teacher writes down some sentences that he heard of during the speaking activity. Teacher asks students to correct the mistakes. T elicits answers. T also focuses on the wrong pronunciation. Teachers provides the right answers.
