Intermediate - B1 level

Description

In this lesson ss will learn about unreal conditional sentences in the context of breaking news. The lesson will start with an introduction by checking ss’ knowledge through eliciting a few examples. Then I will put up a piece of one of the unreal conditional sentences from the text on the w/b and ask ss about its menaing and form. This is followed by a MC exercise that forces ss to choose between real and unreal conditionals. Then I will elicit the full structure of unreal conditional sentences on the w/b and show them how clauses can switch. Then, ss will do exercises 1 and 2 and check their answers in pairs. After that I will drill a few sentences for intonation before moving on to exercise 3. Then I will illustrate how ss can respond to ‘I would’-questions. If there is time, students will do sentence-chaining in groups of 3 as a speaking opportunity.

Materials

Abc Exercise 1 and 2 unreal condiditions 1
Abc MC unreal conditional
Abc exercise 3
Abc Second conditional form

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of unreal conditional sentences in the context of breaking news

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of unreal conditional sentences in the context of breaking news

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I tell the students a hypothetical story using if and would. I will check how much ss know about conditionals by referring to texts 4 and 5 as shown in the grey box on page 79.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will put up a piece of one of the unreal conditional sentences from the text on the w/b and ask a series of questions about its meaning and form.

Multiple Choice (10-12 minutes) • To test ss' ability to distinguish between unreal and real situations through an exercise

Ss will do a MC exercise that forces them to choose between real and unreal conditionals. They could choose either option, but they should explain why by referring to likelihood. They check their answers and explain why they chose it in groups of 3

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To elicit the full structure of unreal conditional clauses

The full structure of unreal conditional sentences will be elicited onto the w/b. Ss will be shown how the clauses can switch using the overview from Cambridge Teaching English Grammar page 237

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss will do exercises 1 and 2 from page 79 of Straigthforward Intermediate Student's book and check their answers in pairs. Correction on the w/b.

Intonation Drill (5-7 minutes) • To work on the correct intonation

I will drill the intonation of the sentences (rising for the first clause, then falling) using the MC question.

Speaking (5-7 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice and speak through ask & answer exercise 3

The ss will work in pairs. They ask and answer questions from exercise 2

Clarification (1-2 minutes) • To provide students with a way to respond to I would-questions

I will give a brief example how to respond to 'I would'-questions

Free Practice (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with practice and speaking opportunity

Ss will do sentence-chaining in groups of 3. Ss need to start a new sentence with the 2nd clause.
