Listening: to provide gist and detailed listening practice using a listening audio about birthdays.

Speaking: to provide fluency and accuracy in the context of birthday frequent habits.
Procedure (29-45 minutes)
* Show the Birthday Photo on OHP * Ask Ss to brainstorm in-pairs all words that come to their mind related to birthdays. * Elicit from Ss the words they could think of and write them on board.
* Add and introduce any necessary vocabulary that might hinder Ss' understanding of the listening, ex: ( celebrate - flight attendant - dumplings - noodles). * Review the pronunciation of the vocabulary on board through coral drill. * Write on the board: - three names: Sun-Hyi, Kenji, Martha. - 3 gist questions as a purpose for the following listening: a. Who usually celebrates their birthday with their family? b. Who doesn’t usually celebrate their birthday with their family? c. Who doesn’t usually celebrate their birthday at all? * Explain to Ss that they will listen to those 3 people on board talking about their birthdays. * Note that they should listen and answer each question on board with one of the 3 names.
* Play the Listening Audio. * Give Ss 1 minute to answer the questions on board. * ask Ss to check their answers in pairs. * Answer the questions with whole class.
# Task (1) : * Ask Ss in-pairs to try to remember what present each speaker is going to get for his/her next birthday. * Play the audio again for Ss to check their answers. * Review answers with whole class. # Task (2) : * Put Ss in groups of 4 each. * Give each group mixed vocabulary and phrases cards. * Tell Ss to look at the words and phrases on cards and note that they are extracted from the audio. * Ask each group to try to remember and match the words and phrases on cards with the speaker who said them. * Give groups 3 minutes to discuss and match. * Ask Ss to listen again carefully to check their answers. * Play the Audio again. * Elicit from Ss their answers and give a whole class feedback on board.
* Put Ss in pairs. * Give each pair an Adverbs of Frequency list. * Ask each pair to use each adverb to discuss and write a sentence expressing something about their personal birthday habits. * Do a model example for Ss to clarify what they are going to do: Ex: (Always) "My mother always decorates the house for my birthday." * Remind Ss that they have 5 minutes to finish this task. * Monitor Ss' progress and provide any necessary help. * Ask each pair to present their birthday habits for the class. * Take notes of any grammatical mistakes. * On board give a whole class feedback.
