Procedure (31-45 minutes)
To begin the class, the students will see a title "Truth and Lies" and discuss the questions "Does it matter to them? if yes, in which areas? or what comes to your mind when you see the title?" then, the teacher narrows down the topic to "Advertisement" and students share their ideas in this area. Finally, the teacher shows the quote from Will Rogers US humorist "advertisement is the art of convincing people to spend the money they don't have on something they don't need" and students discuss it.
Students share their ideas about a picture of an advertisement and try to answer the following questions. What is being advertised? What decade do you think it is from? why do you think they used a doctor in the advert? the teacher elicits their answers and writes them on the board to see if they were right. after that, students will discuss the following Titles which refers to each advertisement they are going to read about to help them more with the context Cigarettes are not harmful to your health The thinner the better Vitamins prevent cancer You can lose weight without dieting or doing exercise
The students receive an HO about 4 of the most misleading adverts of all time. they will read the article individually and answer the questions it follows. they check their answers in pairs, then with the teacher and they must give reasons to prove their answers.
To practice the new vocabulary and make sure the students have learned them completely, They will receive a crossword puzzle. They do this in pairs, then the whole class checks the answers to see if they are true. Finally, to personalize the lesson they will discuss the questions in the file attached.
