Gerunds

Description

In this lesson, students will be able to use and identify different types of gerunds. Students will also have the opportunity to practice vocabulary with gerunds.

Materials

  • To provide review of verbs to express feelings in the context of happiness

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will show SLIDE 1. T will elicit and then write on the white board "sailing, hiking, reading, drinking" from the pictures. T will then pose the question to the students, "What's your idea of happiness?". Sts discuss with each other the idea of happiness. T will remind sts to use gerunds to talk about their happiness.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text

T hands out WS 1. Sts read for specific information and answer to questions, "What makes me happy? What is happiness for me?". Sts will have 3 minutes. After reading, T will ask sts to underline all gerunds. Sts will have 1 minute. T will switch to SLIDE 2. FB: T will distribute markers to individual sts. Sts will standup and underline all the gerunds in the paragraph.

Guided Discovery (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T will distribute WS 2. T will explain that there are three different types of gerunds. From the sample sentences

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T will switch to SLIDE 3. Sts will peer check WS 2. T will provide answers on SLIDE 3. T will elicit

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T distributes WS 3 to sts. Sts have 5 mts to complete Steps 1 and 2. T switches to SLIDE 4. Sts peer check their work. T provides answer key to Step 1 on SLIDE 4, T clarifies any form issues sts may have. T then switches to SLIDE 5 to provide answer key to Step 2, and again, provides any form issues that may arise from sts. Sts then do Step 3. Sts peer check their work. On SLIDE 4, T reveals answer key, sts check their answers, and T provides any clarification.

Vocabulary Revision (8-10 minutes) • To review different ways to use gerunds.

T divides class into groups of 3 or 4. T distributes WS 4. Sts match the statement with the definition. Groups move to another table to peer check. T switches to SLIDE 6 and shows answer key to sts.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T distributes WS 5. Sts will FIRST read the very first column. T tells students to write their answers in their column ONLY. T then asks all sts to stand up and mingle. Sts must find three other sts to match with what they do. Sts will have 5 mts. T will put music on during the speaking.
