Description

In this lesson Ss practise oral fluency in the context of how people celebrate special occasions. They watch an excerpt from the BBC programme about a Greek wedding and practise talking about their own special occasions.

Main Aims

  • To provide oral fluency in the context of special occasions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice in listening for gist in the context of special occasions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1- Project some pictures of special celebrations, use them as a prompts for this activity. Ss Look at the pictures. 2-Ask Ss" What can you see? " to elicit the names of celebrations. 3-Draw a circle on the board and write ‘Party’ in the middle. Now ask Ss for different types of parties, elicit one or two examples then get Ss up and add their own ideas. 4- Ask some follow-up questions: "What special parties do people usually have in your country?" "What do people usually do on these parties?" * Possible answers: birthdays, weddings, Christmas, New Year's Eve, wedding anniversaries, graduation parties....etc

Useful Language (5-7 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

1- Give Ss a quick matching exercise to clarify/ explain the words that will be needed in one of the upcoming tasks. 2- Give SS Ho(1)to match the verbs and the phrases. 3- Demonstrate the task very carefully. SS do the exercise. 4- Ask them to check their answers in pairs. 5- Monitor closely. 6- Project the answer key for feedback. 7- Pre-teach /elicit the word (occasion). Elicit the meaning by using pictures.

Exposure (5-8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

1--Tell Ss they're going to watch a DVD programme about a Greek wedding.Before showing the video I'll write two questions on the WB: Where are they? What are they doing? 3-After watching the movie clip SS will answer about the above-mentioned questions. 1-Tell Ss they're going to watch a DVD again to find out if the sentences are True(T) or false(F). 2-Give Ss( Ho.2) 3-Demonstrate the exercise.. 4-Play DVD. SS watch and answer the questions.They will mark the sentences 1-4 T (true) or F(false). 5- Monitor to see what’s difficult for them. 6- Ask them to compare their answers in pairs. 7-Answer key (on the screen) feedback. 8-Ask some follow-up questions : What do you think of the wedding? Is it the same/different to your country? How? 9- set up groups. SS discuss the questions in group and feedback to the class.

Productive Task(s) (15-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

1-Set up the activity and provide stimulus( set the scene.) 3-Ask SS to think of a special occasion, e.g. a birthday, a national holiday or a wedding. 4-Project some questions on the screen: * What's the name of the occasion? •When and where does it happen? •What do you usually do? Describe three/four activities. •What's your favourite thing on that day? 5- Demonstrate the activity and elicit some examples from Ss. Ask ICQs: -How many questions are you going to answer? -Are you working alone or in pairs? -Are you going to write short answers or long answers? 6- Set up pairs and ask Ss to Work in pairs ,use the questions on the screen and make notes about it to talk about their own special occasions. 7-Monitor and notice what kind of language Ss are using /problems they're having. 8- Feedback. extra activity: (Ask Laura about this stage.) 1-- Tell SS that they're going to listen to someone talking about a special occasion. 2-- Demonstrate the activity. Give Ss Handouts to complete the missing gaps. 3- Play the audio CD. 4- SS answer the questions. 5- Checking answers in pairs. 6-Feedback.(ANSWER KEY on screen) 7- Project some key phrases on the screen. D( group work) 1-Give SS time to look back at their notes again. 2-Set up groups and demonstrate the activity. 3- Tell SS that they are going to work in groups and take turns. One student will talk about his/her special occasions using the key phrases on the screen.Other students: listen and take notes. Then ask two questions about the occasion. Ask ICQs: -Are you working alone or in groups? -Are you going to listen only or take some notes? --How many questions are you going to ask your partner? 4- SS do the task. 5-When they are ready, they are going to present their occasions to the other groups. 5-Monitor and support Ss and take notes on examples of good language and problems, especially with the key phrases. 6- Whole class feedback.

Feedback and Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

(If time permits) - Talk about Ss Special occasions as a Whole class.-If there is still time, do error correction -Take some notes throughout the lesson and write some examples of students' errors on the WB. Make the students correct their errors.
