Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about being-self employed in the context of jobs

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a having different jobs in the context of job
  • To provide clarification of being self-employed in the context of job

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask them which one of you has a job? which one of you has a boss, after show a self-employed person, and then teach the vocabulary items related to the context.

Pre-Listening 1# (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ss are shown questions on ex.1 page 96 on the board. They make notes first, then they discuss these questions. Find someone in class and discuss your opinions.

While-Listening 1# (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible(gist)

Show the lead-in picture to Ss again and ask them to listen to the audio ex 2.a and guess whether these people like being self-employed or not. play it just once, and then get w\c feedback.

While-Listening 2# (13-13 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ask Ss to listen again and do ex 2.b. Do this individually, then check their answers with their partners. For feedback ask them to justify their answers and then play the recording just those parts that Ss have difficulty with. After the second time or the third time if necesaary, give them the correct answers.

Post-Listening 1# (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss are given different job titles. They write about these jobs, but do not write the names of the jobs. They work in pairs, find another pairs and read their notes to them. They need o guess what the job is. As w\c feedback, ask them to decide what description was the best description.
