Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide gist, scan and deduction reading practice using a text about Murder in the context of Crime
Procedure (46-55 minutes)
I will start off by showing 3 pictures of victims who were brutally murdered in Turkey. I will ask the students to see if they know who they are. then, I will ask them to talk about these victims and what happened to them in their groups for 3 minutes. Finally, I will ask one of the students to remark on one of the victims and tell me a quick story about them. Introduce the reading Jack the Ripper, tell students that we are going to read a crime mystery story.
before the students go through the text, I will pre-teach certain blockers to ease the process of reading. This is followed by CCqs to make sure they understand the words. Then, students will be given a text about a famous serial killer and they will be asked to read the text and choose one of the titles provided. they will be given 4 minutes to skim the text.
students will be given 3 true/false questions to find the answer in the text. There will be no justification because the main aim is not reading. the studens will just be given the answer key to the questions. they will have 5 minutes to find the answer to the quesitons before I give the feedback.
I will choose one sentence form the text and write it on the board as the model answer. Then, I will draw students' attention to the text and ask them if they know what it is. Next, I will ask them to go through the text and find similar tag questions and underline them. They will be given two minutes to do that before having a peer check.
The students will be given a matching activity through which they match different type of tag questions. they will have 3 minutes before doing a peer check. I will give the answer key through a slide with an example. Finally, I will draw students attention to the fact that tag questions are used in two ways and each usage has a separate intonation pattern. I will use snapping technique to highlight that before asking them to drill
I will give out the activity to the students and ask them to come up with the appropriate tag questions. There will be two example done for them. They will be asked to do a peer check before I give them the answer.
This free practice is done in pair work. Students will be given pieces of paper on which a certain word from a lexical set has been written. Then, students are asked to use tag questions to find out what word it is. To ease the process of instruction, I will have the instruction on the board before I do a demo.
