Listening and speaking lesson
Intermediate B1 level

Description

In this lesson student's will practice their listening skills through a recording of a famous singer and a songwriter. The lesson will start with a warmer and a lead-in to engage students to the lesson and to set the context. Students will have a variety of activities for the listening stages.

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of news and report

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To engage students in the lesson and to set lesson context

Give out newspapers to students and have them look at it for a minute and ask them What type of news do you like to read ? Do you believe every news you read? After the discussion pre-teach the words rehab, press, prescription drug, and headline through a matching exercise. Give the students two three minutes to work on it alone and do a feedback and ask CCQ's to see if the students understood the words.

Listening for gist (8-9 minutes) • To encourage students to listen general understanding and to get an overview of the text

Tell students that they are going to listen to an interview of Jamie Seabrook and ask them the question (I want you to choose the best sentence that describes the listening)There will be three sentences on the WB. Jamie talking about his drug problem Jamie talking about his carrier and marriage Jamie talking about the lies and the press Ask ICQ to make sure that they understand -how many sentences are you going to choose?

Listening for detail (7-9 minutes) • To practice listening for detail and answering questions

Tell students that they are going to listen to the track one more time, but only the first part. Show students the hand-out and tell them that, there are three questions related to the listening and to listen very carefully and answer the questions. Give them about 10 seconds to look at the questions before playing the track. When they are done tell them to check answers with a partner and take feedback.

Listen for detail (6-7 minutes) • To practice listening for a specific information

Students are going to listen to the second part of the track. Before playing the track show students the hand-out and tell them that its a matching exercise. Make sure to give clear instructions. Tell students that on the right side has the people and the left side is the sentences that these people said about Jamie. Listen to the track carefully and match the people with the sentences. Have students compare their answers and take a feedback.

Listen for detail (7-9 minutes) • To practice detail listening and answering questions

Students are going to listen to the third and final part of the listening. they will be given three questions and they are supposed to give long answers to the questions. Then, they are asked to check their answers in pairs. The teacher will give appropriate feedback later on.

Post/listening task (12-13 minutes) • Provide oppurtunity for students to personalize the context and to practice language

Depending on the amount of students make a group of 3 or 4 and ask students to think about a scandal that they read in a newspaper about a famous person, and then share and discuss it with your friends. Have one student from each group to share the news with the whole class.
