Subsidiary Aims

  • To review pronunciation of fractions.
  • To give practice in listening for specific information

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To get to know students' names draw their attention to fractions

1- Check students' names 2- Stick printouts that show fractions and their pronunciation on the board. 3- Define fractions with the images on the Board. 3- Ask Ss how we say them.Let Ss try to say them first but don't give any feedback. 4- Give a printout of pronunciations to every pair. They discuss and match the printouts on the board. 5- Get Ss to check the answers on the board. Correct if there is a mistake. 6- Drill

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide necessary vocabulary items for reading stage

1- Explain the expression "in touch". Point out that it refers to any kind of communication with someone, it does not have to involve a face-to-face meeting. You can say "We keep in touch by phone/by letter/by email, etc. 2- Ask Ss to write down five names and how they last communicated with these people. Work in Pairs. 3- Ask pairs how they communicated with their friends, write communication methods on the board so the Ss can find out different ways of communication. I can also add some alternatives if necessary.

Pre-Reading 2 (3-6 minutes) • To check if the Ss know what survey and poll mean- to give the Ss practice for gist reading

1- Check if the Ss know what survey and poll mean - try to elicit them. 2- Tell Ss they are going to read the results of a survey. Ask Ss to read the introduction to find out what the survey was about. 3- Ask the Ss for their comments on introduction part and discuss their statements with the rest of the class. (Feedback)

Reading (8-10 minutes) • To get the Ss practice detailed reading and improve speaking skill

1- Get the Ss to read the statements and choose one of the given answers alone. 2- Get the Ss to compare their ideas in pairs and explain why they choose the answers they did. Encourage the Ss to explain their ideas. (Peer Check)

Feedback (5-5 minutes) • To give correct answers and practice Ss for listening

1- Ss listen and find out the correct answers 2- Discuss what is surprising about the correct answers. Choose the pair with the most correct choices.
