To provide gist reading practice using two texts about activities and speak about the activities students like doing at weekends.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide scan the reading text and explain someone's interests and activities.Ss will have understood famous people's life and also explain which activities they like doing at weekend.
Procedure (22-45 minutes)
-T gives some example about collocations such as watch movies and have breakfast. - Ss work in pairs and match verbs in A with the words in B. - T shows verbs and words which show some activities on the whiteboard. One student from each group comes and stick the correct words on the whiteboard. -Ss listen Track 42 and check their answers.
- T divides classroom into four groups and gives them mixed sentences to put in an order while listening Track 42 again. -T elicits sentences and checks pronunciation if necessary. - The whole class checks the answers
-Firstly, watch Jamie Cullum's video and ask some concept checking questions. -Secondly, watch Shilpa Shetty's video and ask some concept checking questions again. -T presents power point slide and ss look at the pictures and read the introductions about them. -Ask some questions about their weekends.
-T divides the classroom into two groups. - Group A reads about James Cullum and Group B reads about Shilpa Shetty. -Teacher monitors and help with their questions. -Each group reads the questions and work in groups. -They answer the questions about their text. -Teacher monitors and helps them.
-T regroups the ss. There is an A and B student in each pair. -Ss talk about the person in their text and answer to the questions in exercise 4. -Then the other group starts talking about the answers to the questions in exercise 4. -T monitors and helps.
-Ss work in pairs from other group and compare Jamie and Shilpa's life. -Ss discuss about the two questions. 'What things do they both like doing?' 'What things are different?' -T monitors and gives feedback.
-Ss write down two things they like doing at weekends. -T collects the papers and then hand them out to different ss randomly. -Ss read the activities on their paper and try to guess the name of the student. - Ss decide which activity is the most popular weekend activity in the class.
-Listen Track 43 a song by Jamie Cullum called 20-Something. -Ss just listen. -T ask some questions ' Do you like his music?, 'What do you feel when you listen his music?'
