Fame & Fortune (P.2)
Upper-Intermediate level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide clarification and practice of verbs followed by gerund/infinitive in the context of reading
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of fame & fortune
Procedure (29-39 minutes)
Ss see pictures from the reading passage and try in pairs/groups of 3 to recall which main points in the passage ("How to become a celebrity") they refer to. T takes brief W/C FB.
Ss see an OHP slide of certain verbs/expressions from the passage they just read and are asked to underline what verb phrases follow them individually. They write them on the board as they find them.
T briefly introduces the concept of "verbs followed by gerunds, infinitives or both/neither" by referring to the examples from the passage (plus introducing the verb "let" in a sentence context). T elicits answers & "why" these verbs are followed by other particular verb phrases. T checks MFP before moving on to practice.
Ss receive copies of the grammar gap-fill exercise from the textbook and are asked to fill in the gaps individually (they are allowed to check their dictionaries or resources online). Ss peer check. T provides W/C fb, double-checking a few possibly problematic cases.
Ss in pairs use the verbs introduced + the ideas in the controlled practice part to find out if their partner will be able to reach fame/fortune. Pairs get together to check. T takes FB from a few groups.
