Description

In this lesson students are going to listen to some people having a conversation about a music festival, Following by sentence examples about giving and asking opinions. The lesson ends with students mingling and asking eachother's opinion about different topics.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation about a village in the context of giving and asking opinion

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review, clarification and practice of language used for asking and giving opinion in the context of music festival in a village
  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about a music festival in the context of giving and asking opinion

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher SHOWS two pictures of a music festival, asks WHAT IS THIS? DO YOU LIKE IT? HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO A MUSIC FESTIVAL? Teacher SHOWS THE QUESTIONS on the board. Sts ASK and ANSWER the questions in pairs.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Sts will listen to 5 people in local village meeting discussing about a music festival. Teacher gives out the papers. Sts look at the picture and match people's names while listening AND decide WHAT IS THE MEETING ABOUT? CHECK ANSWERS IN PAIRS. Teacher SHOWS THE ANSWERS ON THE BOARD. Sts LISTEN to the next part of the meeting. In pairs they talk about WHO IS FOR and WHO IS AGAINST the festival. Teacher SHOWS THE ANSWERS on the board.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Teacher ASKS How do people in the listening activity discuss their opinions? ELICITS one or two sentences if possible. Students in pairs talk about this question. Teacher gives the handout. (ex 4) Students IN PAIRS fill-in the blanks using the words from the box. Teacher gives the answers. Sts LISTEN TO THE SENTENCES from ex 4 and REPEAT.(Pay attention to the stressed words)

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Sts look at sentences from ex 6 and THINK OF REASONS WHY THEY AGREE OR DISAGREE WITH THESE SENTENCES. (they can make brief notes) PUT STUDENTS INTO GROUPS OF FOUR. DISCUSS each topic for at least 1 minute. Encourage them to use the phrases from ex 4 in their discussions. while they are working, Teacher MONITORS and HELPS. IF TIME-When they finish, they mingle and talk about their opinions with different partners. IF TIME- PUT sts into four groups. Sts in group A look at the handout from SB p104, students in group B look at the handout from SB p109, students in group C look at the handout from SB p112 and students in group D look at the handout from SB p113. Give a minute or two to read the information and check they understand the situation. They discuss the topic. Teacher monitors.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Teacher WRITES some of the sentences from her notes. Sts work in pairs and correct the wrong ones. Report back.
