TP 3. Ordering food or drink at a cafe
Beginner level

Description

Students are going to learn the function of ordering food or drink at a cafe and practice the skill of speaking. First, students will be exposed to a conversation between a customer and barista and then drill the conversation to do a freer practice on asking prices of items on the cafe's menu. After a controlled practice, students will ask about different items of the menu to strengthen their ability of using the function in a freer practice.

Materials

Abc Gap-fill handout

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of language used for asking prices in the context of a cafe

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of food and drink on a cafe's menu

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will present a picture of the cafe in ITI and ask these question? where is it? Who is the women? what do you usually buy from it? Then for the lead-in, Sts will see a picture of a menu from the book.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

After matching the prices and items on the menu, sts will see a video of a conversation in the cafe to, first, answer a gist question and, second, be exposed to the TL function, which is going to be practiced freer toward the end of the lesson.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Sts will, primarily, learn some vocabulary about food and drink on the cafe's menu. Then, they are going to do a fill-in-the-blanks activity for this stage. Teacher tries to be involved less and let sts discover the structure of the function themselves. Teacher can highlight the structure on the WB with the help of sts. I need to clarify the intonation and sentence stress.

Productive Task(s) (13-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Sts are going to roleplay the conversation they have already listened and practice. One takes the role of a customer and one the assistant.

Feedback and Error Correction (2-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Each stage has its own short feedback, however, before a freer practice to end the class in which sts are going to ask about any other items on the menu, they will receive feedback on intonation of questions and answers. After drilling and free practice, I am going to provide a delayed feedback on WB.
