Description

In this lesson Ss wıll get the opportunity to practice speaking and listening skills in the context of sport. The lesson starts wıth topic-based speaking task where Ss interview each other in pairs. This is followed by listening for specific information and detail. Finally, Ss will have a discussion related to the topic in small groups.

Main Aims

  • To provide specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about an interview with an ex-Champions League football referee in the context of sport

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency in topic-based speaking task through a quastionnaire in the context of sport
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion related to the listening in the context of sport

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show the pictures about sports I lıke Task - What connects all these sports on the pictures? There are two of them that I lıke, two of them I did in the past, one - I do now) Task - Ss try to guess which sports I did in the past, now and which I like.

Topic-based speaking (5-7 minutes) • To provide Ss fluency in topic-based speaking task through a quastionnaire in the context of sport

Present a questionnaire Ss work in pairs to ask and answer the questions Monitor FB - write on the board good and bad language Ss produced during the interview Ss correct the mistakes

Pre-Listening (2-4 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening and make it accessible

Ss look at the photo of the man and try to guess his job (referee) Drill the pronunciation Ss discuss in small groups: 'In your country, are referees a)well-paid, b) respected, c)unpopular Why do you think somebody would want to become a referee?

Listening #1 (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging specific information listening task

Pre-teach: frustrated, spectators,contest, detect, simulation Ss listen and choose the correct answer Peer-check Provide an answer key

Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

Pre-teach: interpretation Ss listen and fill the missing words Peer-check Listen again if necessary Peer-check Provide a tapescript to check the answers

Post-Listening (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss discuss in small groups: do you agree with the referee that there is more cheating in football than before? İs it true in other sports as well? Would you like to be a sports referee? Why? Why not? Justify your answer Rearrange the pairs to share opinions
