Procedure (41-56 minutes)
WATCH the video. Task- What do we study about today? - Does anybody know any of these languages? Sts in pairs ask the following questions.(ex a) Do you know anybody who speaks more than two languages? Which languages do they speak? (If possible, elicit this question) How did they learn? (if possible, elicit)
Sts match the languages with words 1-11 in pairs/groups. Then listen and check.(ex b) Teacher SHOWS the answers on the board.(if necessary) SHOW VISUAL of Alex Rawlings. Ask them to GUESS "WHAT DO YOU SEE?" "WHAT DO YOU THINK THE TEXT IS ABOUT?" Teacher WRITES 11, asks "WHAT DO YOU THINK THIS NUMBER IS?" TELL them or ELICIT that he can speak 11 languages. Ask them to WRITE 3 questions to ask about Alex. Elicit a few questions on the w/b.
Give text. READ THE TEXT and see if you can FIND THE ANSWERS to your questions. Pairs- ASK YOUR PARTNER your questions. Give questions. (ex c, p 36). Sts read the text again and ask the questions to their partner. Put 2 or 3 answer keys on the wall.
Sts LOOK AT THE HIGHLIGHTED WORDS AND PHRASES.(ex d) WORK OUT THEIR MEANINGS in pairs. GIVE the handout. Students MATCH THE WORDS with their DEFINITION in pairs. Early finishers help other pairs. If sts are struggling with some words, ask CCQs.
