Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of modals of obligation in the context of manners

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed in the context of manners

Procedure

Warmer (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask one of my colleagues to call me constantly during the first 2 minutes of the lesson to show them how rude it is to have your cellphone on during the class. Then we will watch a video for 2.5 minutes about cellphone manners.

Exposure (5-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text

First, I will ask them what frustrates/bothers them about people using cellphones in public. Then, students will look at the title of the reading text and have a quick read. Then they will answer the questions in the exercise 2.a

Highlighting (5-7 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Here the students will read the text again and match the highlighted phrases with their meanings. By this way they will be interacting more with the modals of obligation. Exercise 2.b

Controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Here I will use the back of the student's book where there are grammar exercises only. Page 139. First, we will listen to some examples of modals and then I will ask them to do the exercises and then check in pairs.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Here we will talk about some ill-mannered behavior and I will ask students to work in groups and tell us their opinions.
