Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of lifestyle and new words in the text in the context of a survey and an article

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

show a picture and elicit ( can I live to be 100?) Then, ask Ss to talk in pairs ( how can I live to be 100?) Get FB from 2 or 3 Ss.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1) Show three pics of countries and tell Ss in one minute talk in their groups what do they have in common. Then ask 3 Ss, in general, to know about all the pics. (time: about 2-3 minutes) 2) Give the Vocab HO to Ss and show the pictures on the WB. Then Ss in groups of three would try to find out and match the definitions with the pictures and stick them on the WB under the corresponding picture. (time: 5 minutes) 3) Ss look at the WB and in groups discuss what they think help people to live to be a hundred.

While-Reading (skimming) (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

1)Then give the article to each group and Ss quickly scan the article (each student only has one part of the reading) on their own. Then they share ideas in groups and tell each other the reason why they choose those option.

While-Reading (Details) (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

1) Ss read the article again and then do the matching, to match a specific description for each of the paragraphs. Then after each student is done they pass their papers to the student next to them and they read and check their answers. they pass it until all of the students in each group have read all the article. And Teacher shows the AK on the WB.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

1) Ss in their groups look at the first exercise and discuss: *Things that are true for people in your country?* 2) After they are done, one student would change place and share their ideas to see if they agree or not. 3) Ss get in groups of two and Students A ask questions and students B answer. (If we have extra time: Ss change partner and this time they tell about their previous partner to the new partner and decide how healthy they live)
