Description

In this lesson, the Sts will be exposed to Family Relationships/Relative through reading the relevant text provided. Additionally, Sts will read and choose the correct words from the choices and be exposed to Wh...? Qs in Present Simple form with using their existing knowledge of +/-/? of Present Simple. provide Ss with practice in reading for gist and specific information through a reading about a person (Andy Castle) who lives with his family at the age of 37.

Main Aims

  • The main aim is to provide an opportunity for Sts to practice in reading for gist and specific information after an initial warm-up activity through discussing in pairs. After the gist reading, Sts will continue with the reading for detail in the context of adult living at home

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide a speaking practice of Family lexis in the context of Family/Relatives in Present simple form and also reviewing family vocab.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

A family photo of myself to lead-in will be used. Followed by a mini discussion about the family and living with the family. Next I will show Andy's picture and ask them what they think of him. Sts will discuss in pairs for 2-3 minutes about "The age of an adult leaving the family home and getting married".

Pre-Reading/Listening (Gist Task) (10-12 minutes) • The aim is to prepare students for the text through gist task and make it accessible and gain confidence for detailed reading. The aim is also getting the Sts focus on a general understanding of the text.

I will ask Sts to read the text quickly without worrying about new language. I will write "The Castle Family" on the board and ask them to pair-up and discuss "What is the problem" for 3-5 minutes. I will ask pairs about their opinions of the problem of the Castle family through asking CCQ.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

After discussing "What the problem is" with the Castle Family, Sts will be exposed to T/F activity which will enable Sts to understand the TL more. Sts will underline the correct words about the family which will be the initial introduction of family members. This exercise is alos a recap of Present Simple/Verb (be).

While-Reading/Vocabulary (Family Lexis) (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

After completing the reading for specific information task. I will pair them up and ask the pairs to find all the family words; DAUGHTER-SON-FATHER-MOTHER. Wh...? questions as shown below; Why does Andy live at home? Why Andy's mother is happy about Andy? Why Andy's father has a problem? Does Andy have money? Does Andy have many friends? etc.

Post-Reading activity (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Sts will be paired up and cut up handouts for the Family Tree will be given in order to complete the task in pairs through asking each other questions. Activity P134-136 The Family. This will enable them to repeat the TL and also the vocabulary.
