Main Aims

  • To provide the Ss with understanding, clarification, and practice of the linkers

Subsidiary Aims

  • Practice TL by reading and speaking

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T starts by welcoming the Ss and saying, "today, we're going to talk about LUUUVE." - T asks who the Ss to raise their hands if they are single, in a relationship, engaged or married. - T asks Ss to change places so each desk would have a variety of marital statuses - T hands out the pictures of the 'stages of love' - T asks the Ss to work in pairs and talk about the stages of love and how they evolve - Meanwhile, T hangs the two pictures of empty hearts - complete heart and broken heart - on the walls, on the far ends of the classroom - After the Ss finish the activity, all Ss stand up and go to choose which heart they prefer and tick on the heart as a symbol of their vote (this activity relates this lesson to the one after)

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

- T provides the Ss with the reading material including an attached list of questions for the gist task - with the left side folded because it contains some info related to another task (ex 1a) - T asks the Ss to read the text for the first time - Ss discuss the answers in pairs for 2 minutes - Ss check answers with the whole desk - T provides the answer keys - T asks if anyone had a different answer

Highlighting (6-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

- T instructs the Ss to unfold the right side of the paper - Ss try to fill in the blanks with the proper word in pairs - Ss then listen and check their answers - T holds the answers keys and hides them behind another paper - T instructs the whole class to guess the answers by seeing them slowly, part by part - Then, Ss, in pairs, discuss the ex 1b - T provides answer keys

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- T provides material from p.16 ex 1c - T provides answer key and notes down mistakes for delayed correction - T provides guided discovery worksheet and instructs the Ss to work in pairs to try to figure out the meaning and form - Meanwhile, T writes the words on the board and waits for the Ss to finish - T provides feedback and asks the CCQ's - If time, T drills the TL with the Ss

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

- T provides Ss with material with magnified sentences, cut part by part and attached together by a paper clip - T instructs the Ss to put the sentences in order by organizing the pieces of paper - Meanwhile, T hangs the answer key on the walls around the classroom showing their backside- one for each desk, with adhesive material - T reads the answer key with a low voice so Ss listen carefully to what the T is saying - Then Ss go to the walls and fill in the squares with the correct number - Finally, they check with the answer key hung there

Free Practice (8-9 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

- T provides the Ss with material - T instructs the Ss to complete the sentences with their own words - T asks ICQ's: -Are you going to write the answers? No / -Are you going to speak your ideas? Yes - T then monitors the Ss and take notes about mistakes - T highlights the mistakes, when made, and asks Ss for the correct form - T gives feedback
