Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of Hostel Vocabulary in the context of Travel
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of Travel

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

After greeting, I ask students about their experience of their accommodation during their travels.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-15 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I give the students some cutouts and pictures to match as a passive vocabulary activity. Then I ask their answers and match them on the board. Then, I show a picture of a luxury hotel and ask them is it a good place to stay? Then, I show them a picture of a hostel and ask them the name of these types of places (Hostel). Finally, I ask them do you like to stay in a hostel or hotel? and give them two to three minutes to talk about it with their partners.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-16 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I give students two texts (one for group A and one for group B), and also give them some questions to answer them individually. ICQ is so important at this stage. Then I ask them to check their answers with their partners. Then as a feedback, I check the whole class answers. This step follows by regrouping the students to have A and B pairs. Then I give them different questions (for A & B) and ask them to ask the questions of their partners. After monitoring and some minutes, I ask some students to answer some questions.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I play a video and give them some handouts to answer the questions individually while watching the video. Then I ask them to check their answers in pairs. Then, I give them the answer sheet to check their answers. If there is time, I ask them to have a discussion with their partner about their experience of staying in a hotel or hostel.
