Description

In this lesson, students raise their awareness about the different types of English spoken around the world through a reading text.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about languages in the context of different types of English used around the world.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of English language.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show the ss "variety words" doc and tell them to guess the meanings of the bold words with their pairs. Ss guess the meaning, discuss them in the class.

Pre-Reading (6-9 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Give the students scrumbled paragraphs of the text. Tell them to put the text into the correct order. Ss puts it into the correct order. Then, as a whole class we only check the order, by checking the paragraph numbers.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading task

Tell the ss to read the text and answer the questions in Reading - Ex.1 in pairs. The ss read and answer the questions in pairs.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-13 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading task

Tell the students to read the text again and find examples for the sentences on Reading - Ex.2

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Tell ss to write one correct and one incorrect statement from the text and sponge the paper. Tell them to throw it to each other and when each group gets one, they tick the correct sentences and correct the incorrect sentences.

Speaking (6-9 minutes) • Ss will be able to speak fluently about the effect of English on other languages and their reasons.

Ss work in pairs and answer the questions in Speaking Ex-1 and share their ideas with the class.
