Procedure (43-55 minutes)
Teacher turns off the lights and plays the ghost sounds. Asks students what they think it will be about. Elicit as much vocab until you get 'ghosts'. Ask the students to discuss with their partner if they believe in ghosts, and if they have a favorite book or movie about ghosts.
Teacher uses eliciting techniques and images to pre-teach the following vocab. spooky haunted werewolves vanish skeptical proof. Drill some of the tough words to pronounce like vanish and werewolves.
Students are placed into groups and then given the story out of order. The students must put the stories in order with each correct paragraph heading. Once completed, students check other groups answers. Teacher then passes out full story in order for the students to check answers.
The teacher passes out the true and false statements and has the students work individually to mark whether they are true or false. After completed they check with pairs. Once complete hand out the answers. Clarify all the false statements.
Teacher asks the students to discuss two questions. 1. What they think really happened at Brockfield castle that weekend. 2. If they would like to go on a ghost-hunting weekend. Nominate feedback.
Teacher draws attention to the bolded text in the reading. Elicits what kind of speech that is. Highlight that they are all idioms. Tell the students that they will get a handout with definitions of the idioms and write the correct ones from the reading. Hand out the definitions handout and ask them to work in pairs. Once done have the students fill in the correct answers on the WB.
Tell the students to get into 4 groups. They will now tell their own scary story. It will have to include all 6 words that were taught pre-reading and at least one idiom. Give them 5 minutes to complete. Once done have one member from each group read the story.
