Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide oral practice of the future tense while making future plans

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

First, I use the OHP to show Ss a picture of two people, Pete and Debbie then I ask them to discuss in groups who looks more positive, Pete or Debbie ? and why? After giving them some time to discuss in groups, I listen to each group's guess with their logical explanation.

Listening Task (7-9 minutes) • To introduce the target language via a listening

we are going to listen to the audio which includes two conversations about plans. The first is between Pete and his friend, the second is between Debbie and her friend. I ask them: What do you need to do while listening ? answer some questions Who are they talking to ? their friends After listening for the first time, they can check their answers in pairs. We listen again if needed, then we write the answers on the board.

Highlighting Target Language (7-8 minutes) • To highlight the target language (will, going to and the present continuous for future)

To make this part more student-centered, I ask Ss to look at the following sentences and work in groups on the questions 1. Maybe I’ll just celebrate at home with a few friends. 2. I’m going to invite all my friends for my birthday party. 3. I’m meeting my brother for a drink this evening. Do these sentences talk about the past, present or future plans? future plans Which sentence includes a plan decided before the time of speaking? the second one Which sentence has an arrangement? the third one. Is " will " always followed by v-ing or an infinitive? infinitive And I monitor them while discussing these questions with their groups.

Clarifying Target Language (14-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

After the highlighting process, I elicit the answers from Ss: We use 'will' when we decide at the time of speaking, we use 'going to' when we talk about a plan decided before the time of speaking and the present continuous to express an arrangement. I try to elicit drawing the timeline on the board. After that I elicit the form through answering the questions they discussed in groups: S + Will + Infinitive S+(is-am-are) going to + infinitive S+ (is-am-are)+ v-ing Then we move to the pronunciation: Maybe I’ll just celebrate at home with a few friends. /aɪl/ I’m going to invite all my friends for my birthday party. /mgənə ɪnˈvʌɪt/ I’m meeting my brother for a drink. /aɪm/ Choral drilling to make sure they have the correct pronunciation After that, they have a short practice exercise where they have to choose the correct answer. When they finish, they can check with a partner and then we check all together. Then, we move to another exercise where they have to put the verbs in the present continuoius To make sure they understood what they have to do, I ask Do we have to put will? No Do we have to put going to? No Which tense do we need to use? Present continuous Then they check in pairs and we write the answers on the board, if there are mistakes I try to elicit the correct answers from Ss who noticed the mistakes

Language Practice (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the task language

Half of the Ss will be given papers (one color) with their weekly schedule on it, the other half will be given papers with a different color with a different schedule. the two halves need to mingle to find two people and arrange a suitable time to meet them separately in the next week.
