In this lesson, students learn about the functional language of offering (Can I help you?) through a dialogue between a sales assistant and a customer.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Have a visual on Mado (cafe) and allow students to think what they like to eat or drink in a cafe. Set a 2 min. time limit and listen to their answers and write it on the WB.

Pre-Teach Vocab (5-7 minutes) • To pre-teach/unblock key vocab needed to help students complete the task.

Elicit words through visuals. Ss will match the food and drink to photos. Check with their answers with their pairs. FB Ss will ask Ex: How much is an espresso and a croissant? Three pounds and thirty. Monitor

Listening Task (6-8 minutes) • To introduce the TL via listening

Ss will have a listening task where they will write down the order and cost of 1st and 2nd customer. Repeat if necessary. Answers will be given to Ss

Highlighting TL (5-8 minutes) • To highlight the target language by fill in gap activity

Ss will have a H/O of a fill in gap task to do after T's instructions with their pairs. Answers will be provided through listening. Monitor

Clarifying target language (5-7 minutes) • To: Clarify meaning of target language, model and provide controlled practice of pronunciation, highlight form

In this stage T will teach Ss meaning and form of TL. T will provide better understanding of the functions being used in the dialogue. T will highlight the difference between eat in (eat in the cafe) and take away(take away the food and eat somewhere else. Also teach of course as an alternative to sure.

Language Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the task language

Ss will be allowed to go over the dialogue with their pairs. T will monitor the Ss T will give feed back and correct any wrong usage of the language
