Description

In this lesson the students will practice using defining and non-defining relative clauses.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of defining and non-defining relative clauses in the context of books that are best-sellers.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide writing practice of a paragraph about some celebrity using the target language.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Showing the learners a set of pictures and asking them a questions that makes them think about the importance of defining and non-defining relative clauses.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Provide the students with a text with defining and non-defining relative clauses and questions that help them understand the difference between sentences in blue (defining) and the ones in pink (non-defining relative clauses). Remember to get feedback and check understanding of meaning and use.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ask Ss to go through the reading text to find more defining and non-defining relative clauses. Encourage pairwork and peer checking and justification for feedback.

Ask the students to read for gist a text about Stieg Larsson's first book and then fill in the gaps with the correct relative pronouns. Students check their answers with the printed answers from the Teacher's Book.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

In pairs, students join the sentences using defining and non-defining relative clauses. inviting some students to write their sentences on the board for to concept check further.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

To personalize the target language, have Ss write a short paragraph about a celebrity that they know about. Encourage them to include TL in their writing wherever possible. Ask some students to put their paragraphs on the board to deal with correction.
