To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of sightseeing
Procedure (29-45 minutes)
Greet students, tell them they are going to see some pictures, show pictures of famous sightseeing around the world, elicit their names, tell them to work in pairs and talk about sightseeing in Turkey. Take feedback from a few ss.
Show them the context of sightseeing on the WB, ask students to read the text for 1 minute, then ask them what people can do and can't do in New York. Elicit some target sentences and write on the board.
Write sentence markers on the board
Write form on the board" subj+can+ v subj+can't +v does it have s? no How about verb? does it have ing? no does it have ed? no ask ss to make sentences with can. give some examples. clarify stress/ pronunciation/ intonation.
tell students they are going to do a matching task .show them the HO and tell them " what can you do in New York, match the questions and answers in 3 minutes. Give them the HOs, then work in pairs and check your answers. then ask 2 ss to come to WB to write the answers on the board, take WC feedback.
Tell ss they are going to listen to a listening and fill in the blanks with can and can't. give them the HOs and play the CD. check answers in pairs,Take feedback.
Teacher models some sentences about what she can do and can't do in Istanbul" I cant drive when I drink alcohol. I can't break traffic rules. I can't park my car in front of park sign. I can visit museums and mosques. Tell ss" you should make a list about what you can do and can't do in IStanbul. Give them HOs ,they have 3 minutes, monitor them , then tell them compare their answers in pairs and ask them to stand up and talk in groups,
