In this lesson, the students learn past simple (irregular verbs) through a reading text. After clarification stage, controlled and free practices will be provided for the students.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T asks the ss to tell what they see in the picture -Ss talk PW -T gets feedback -T elicits one or two unknown words

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

-T shows the picture of the reading text -T asks ss to tell him what the picture is about -T gets WC FB -T shows two questions on WB -T asks ss to read the text and answer the 2 questions -T gives HO1 -Ss check PW - T gets FB

Highlighting (1-2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-T elicits the answer of the questions -T writes the marker sentence on the board

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-T asks a few CCQs -T breaks down the form by writing the first and second part of the highlighted word on WB contrastively -T asks the ss to tell him the pink words in the text -T writes them on the board -T gives drilling

Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-T shows Ho 2 to the ss and asks them to fill the gaps - the ss do it and check PW - T nominates the ss to come to WB -T gives a WC FB

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

-T shows some questions by projector -T models the questions with one of the ss -T asks ss to talk PW - T gets WC FB

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

- T tells the ss that they need to talk about their last trip - T models the task -T sets 4 groups -ss form groups in different parts of the class -ss talk in groups - T monitors and takes notes -T gives delayed feedback and error-correction
