Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about Gosforth Hall Hotel in the context of A night in a hunted hotel

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information in the context of Stephan's experience. Also to practice fluency in speaking.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show them a funny picture of a ghost and then ask them if they believe in ghosts? why? why not? showing a genuine interest. After that I will show them pictures of the blocking words, trying to elicit it from them, or just telling them what it means if they don't know it, then i drill and write down the words on the white board. Showing where to stress.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

In this stage , I will be eliciting some prepositions from the students using some pictures on the projector, then I drill the rest. Then they will be asked to answer the first activity which is a matching activity to make sure they understood the prepositions. After that they will be engaged into a speaking controlled activity, showing a demonstration first with a student then a demonstration between two students in an open pair. Then the whole class participates in this activity with careful monitoring from the teacher to offer help whenever needed.

While-Reading activity #1-a (10-14 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

First I will ask the students, what's the hotel name and in which room did the ghost appear? So they can have a gist reading so they can be bit familiar with the text when they read it the next time for detail. After that I will give the students thirty seconds to read the questions in exercise #1-a, and then i will ask them to read individually to answer the questions above. After 2 minutes i will ask them to check the answers in pairs. Then feedback to check their answers. As for the exercise #1-b, I will ask them to speak together discussing this question and then i will ask them what their partners said.

While-Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, reading/listening tasks

I will tell the students that now we are going to listen to how did Stephan spend his night in the hotel room. First, I will give them time to read and prepare the questions before I play the record. Then I will ask them if they want to listen again but that;s before they start answering any question. Then they start answering the questions individually, after that they will be divided in pairs to check their answers.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The last stage of this lesson is to get them to speak about if ghosts are real, have you heard a story about ghosts.
