Love Your Neighbours
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson, students will learn and practice present continuous tense by using some of the vocabulary from the previous lesson. SS will be engaged in receptive skill development by listening for specific information related to neighbours. The lesson will continue with the clarification of meaning, form and pronunciation for present continuous tense. SS will then move onto further exercises in order to practice speaking by using present continuous. This will be done through p/w during which SS will compare two pictures and try to find the differences by asking each other questions. Finally, if there is enough time, SS will play a miming game for freer practice of verb phrases.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of the present continuous tense in the context of neighbourhood.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of verb phrases to talk about what people are doing.
  • To provide speaking practice for accuracy in the context of neighbourhood.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show SS the image, Link it to the previous lesson and set the context once again with (ex2a): 'Why people in flat 5 cannot sleep?' Set up pw/gw for SS to discuss what is the problem in the apartment. Find out which vocabulary are the students familiar with.

Exposure (7-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Show the HO. Give instructions for listening to the people in flat 5 and filling the blanks with the verbs from the list (ex2b). Listen again if necessary. SS pair-check their answers.

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

SS find the completed version of the dialogue (ex2b) on their HOs along with 4 CCQs to get SS interested in the TL. SS will answer the questions individually, then peer-check.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Whole class FB for the answers of CCQs, encourage guided discovery to clarify the meaning of the TL. Set the context for the present continuous tense. Draw a timeline to underline the meaning. Focus on the form by using the HO1 and example sentences from the dialogue. Clarify the form on the w/b. Use (ex2c) to allow some p/w. Focus on contractions and drill for pronunciation.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Regroup SS according to their colour-code. Introduce the HO2 (two pictures that look almost the same but have a few differences, p102,107). Give instructions for the task. Encourage SS not to show their pictures to each other but ask questions. Model, if necessary. Encourage SS not to use L1. End the task with W/C FB.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Make a small rearrangement of seats or ask SS to play while standing up. Introduce the mime game in TsBk p221. Give instructions. Model your card and allow SS to play together. Monitor and take notes on the use of the TL.

Freer Practice (5-6 minutes) • Delayed error correction

If time, volunteer students will mime their given word in front of the class. This activity will allow for some delayed error correction concerning the appropriate use of TL with its correct form and pronunciation.
