Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of there is and there are in the context of places

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of places and objects in a room

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask what they see in the class. Write a few sentences with there is there are."There are ten students." "There is a computer."

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Give Ss the dialogue with "there is/are". Ask them to roleplay. First show a demo. Give them the names of the characters in the dialogue and ask them to do roleplay. The activity will continue until one character talks to all students who are the other character. After they did it a few times, they will add more details to the dialogue.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ask ss to check the sentences in their dialogues with there is and there are. Each Ss tells one sentence. Write them on the board.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ask them which ones are negative, which ones are positive and question. Post pictures related to the example sentences and write the sentences on the board with gaps. Ask them to fill in the blanks. Write sentences with some and any to remind the rule there. Drill the sentences.

Controlled Practice (7-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Give them fill in the blanks activity. They complete and peercheck. Listen the answers and drill them by checking the linking between the consonants and the vowel sounds. Give them jumbled questions and the map related to the questions. They put them in order and ask them eachother in pairs. .

Semi-Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ask students to write questions in pairs by checking the map in order to get both positive and negative answers. they stand up and ask questions to eachother by walking around. Name Ss as A and B. Ask A to draw the map of their home by showing the important places near their home and B to draw the the picture of their room. Show them what to do and then they ask eachother questions to understand what are there near A's home and what are there in B's room.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ask Ss to stand up and find people who have the objects in their room written on the worksheet. They ask questions to their friends and take notes. Teacher monitors and takes notes of Ss errors. T writes the errors and ask them to correct the errors in pairs. Correct the errors. If they don't know the objects show the pictures of them.
