Main Aims

  • To provide process writing practice of an essay

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about learning a new skill
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation about learning a new skill

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show them picture or illustrate that you are texting. Text on your phone. Ask them what am I doing now? ICQ: Am I writing? (yes) I like to text my mother on Facebook.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of ability to read and deduct topic sentence

Individually let them read the paragraph for 3 minutes and underline the main topic sentence. PW: check answers WC: Feedback PW: Ask them what is the the paragraph mainly about? (answer B: Why the writer wants to learn how to swim.) PW: check answers WC: Feedback PW: students put the correct topic sentence with the correct body Answers l-r; Soccer, People, David, Ice Hockey

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

A topic sentence gives information about the paragraph. Does the topic sentence give information about the whole essay? (no, paragraph) You can write topic sentences in many ways. PW: let students read about body sentences and select the correct topic sentence

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test
