Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with practice in speaking for fluency in the context of close friends who are different from you

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give Ss practice in listening for gist and detail in the context of close friends who are different from you

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show a picture of you and your friend. Ask: 'Who do you see? What is the difference between us?' Ss answer. Tell shortly about this friend and how you are different. Ask Ss: 'Do you think close friends should be similar or different?' Ss discuss in pairs.

Exposure (10-12 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through listening

Show the photos of Antonia and her friend. Tell Ss that they are going to hear Antonia talking about her friend, who is very different from her (Track 1.07). But first, let Ss go through the questions in HO1, then they listen and find which 2 questions Antonia doesn't answer. Ss check in pairs and with the whole class. Ask Ss to match the questions and answers. Ss check in pairs and with the whole class. Tell Ss To listen again and fill in the missing words in HO2 (a tapescript of Track 1.07). Ss check in pairs and with the whole class.

Useful Language (3-5 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Show some pictures of different people and elicit the words e.g. tall/short, talkative/quiet, party animal/homebody, extrovert/introvert; liking rock music/classical music.

Productive Tasks (15-18 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practise target productive skills

Tell Ss to think about a friend who is different from them and answer the questions from HO1. Tell them to write more differences between them. Allow them to make notes (not writing the sentences!). Encourage them to apply useful language. Put Ss in pairs and let them ask and answer about their friends. Then Ss mingle, tell about their friends plus must write down what differences between their friends other people have. Monitor and help when necessary.

Feedback and Error Correction (4-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Write on w/b the errors you heard during the speaking activity. Let Ss correct them.
