Description

In this lesson students practice reading in the context of "alternative lifestyles". They will start with a gist task and then read for detail. Further, students will use the information they learned to discuss in a freer manner.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about Paradise ridge. magazine article about living in a closed community in the Canadian mountain

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of locations used in the context of accomodation.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

As a warmer or lead in, the students will be shown 4 pictures of nice houses in different environments, one at a time. They are told to write down five adjectives about each one. Then they should compare their work in pairs to see if they had the same adjectives. Then they should share which one they liked the most and why in WC. ICQs: Are you going to just look at the pics?[no] Are you going to write down words?[yes] What words?[adjectives]

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

For pre-reading some words are pre-taught. I think the students might know some off them so a matching exercise will be done. The SS should chose the correct meaning for each word. Then their pair check and lastly the correct answers is elicited on the board. ICQs Are you going to explain the meaning of the words? [no] Are you going to match the word with the meaning? While-Reading/Listening #1 (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The ss will be told to take a look at the picture from the book and the title. They should guess which section of the magazine the article comes from. Then they should read the text and see if their guess was correct. They have three alternatives to chose from. Check in pairs. ICQs Read and write something?[no] Read and chose one alternative?[yes]

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Now SS have to read the text again and tick the information that is mentioned in the text. They have eight alternatives to tick. This detailed reading exercise will give them more understanding of the text. The correct answers will be elicited from the ss and written on the board. ICQs What should you do if you find it in the text?[tick] If not? [x]

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

They should think of possible disadvantages in living in such a place in pairs. Then they are asked for some examples and written on the board. Then they get a script of five residents speaking about their experience of the living. SS are divided into groups of 4 and the 8 sentences are put on the wall. with different color markers they will tick the correct sentences. WC FB and highlighting correct sentences. Depending on the time, they might get the chance to discuss if they would like to live on the place. Otherwise, EC will be done.

Error correction (3-4 minutes)

Correct any mistakes students have made.

See if they remember some adjectives from the text. Sentences will be projected and the adjective will be hidden. SS need to find it in the text.
