Description

In this lesson students learn about how to use should have. They are introduced to "regret" where they should talk in pairs about something they regret from the past. Then they listen to a conversation with a gist task and then a highlighting listening follows that. Then MFP is clarified followed by a practice stage and a freer exercise.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Set the context, Show a picture that shows regret on the projector. Tell a story about something that I regret and tell class what "I should have done" instead. Ask class about something they regret and let them discuss in pairs.

Exposure (5-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

For exposure, students will listen to a conversation between two persons talking about Ratner. A successful business man who lost everything because of a joke he made in public about his products. Further, they chose a general meaning for it, they have four alternatives to chose from. Check in pairs, then whole class. ICQ Should you read a text? Should you listen and write a summary? Should you listen for the general meaning? CCQ What did he sell?

Highlighting (4-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Let students listen again and fill in should have and shouldn't have in the blank spaces in the script. They should then check in pairs before the WC feedback. ICQ Should you read a text? Should you listen and write a summary? Should you listen for the general meaning?

Clarification (10-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Clarify the meaning using exercise 2. SS will be invited to fill in should have in the sentece. The main sentence "he should have kept his mouth shut" will be projected and the meaning will be elicited. I will also use the difference between should have (regret, criticism) and should do (advice). CCQ. Did you go to bed early?[No] Is it in the past?[Yes] Is it still possible?[No] Critisise Clarify the from: [+] subj + should + have+ past participle [-] subj + shouldn’t +have+ past participle [?] Should + subj + have + past participle Clarify the pronunciation: Explain that we use Should've in speech but not in writing. main stress on " should've and mouth shut". Controlled Practice (8-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

For controlled practice Ss have to fill in should have an the verb in the brackets and an extra exercise from EU p.144 (grammar practice). Then pair check then WC FB. Teacher will look for errors here and correct. Icq: Should you write any word?[No] Should you just write the verb?[No] What should you write with it? [have]

Free Practice (14-14 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss will be divided into groups and have to come up with things they regret about the topics or they can chose any topic they want. Discuss the things suggested in 1-3 and write down 3 sentences. Then put them on the wall and change to the other groups texts. Then they should discuss their problems. Teacher will listen extra careful for errors and do both hot and cold EC.

If there is time over at the end, the ss will get a chance to practice using more exercises e.g. from the book.
