Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of The second conditional in the context of money and travelling

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about If I had a million dollar song in the context of money and travelling
  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in talking about imaginary or hypothetical situations in the context of money and traveling

Procedure

Lead-in (1-3 minutes) • To generate interest in the context of the listening

- I will present a picture and ask some questions related to the picture.e.g., what do you think about that man? Is he poor or rich? And try to elicit more ideas from them by asking more questions like, - what is he thinking about? -Does he have the money right now? -In the second picture ask them, "what do you think, what he would use the money for?

Listening task (3-5 minutes) • To practice listening for specific information and introduce the target language through the listening

-I will give the students a handout with some missing words from the song, mainly they are related to the pattern of the second conditional sentence -I will ask the students to fill in the gaps while they are listening to the song. -Following that, they will check in pairs, then I will check the correct answer with them.

Highlighting target language (3-6 minutes) • To highlight the target language by using a guiding task" the fill in gap activity" for the song

- I will ask one of the students to read one sentence from the song - I will write the sentence on the board - I will highlight the if clause and the result clause pattern.by asking students what we do have after if and the same with the result clause. - I will highlight the fact that, the result clause could come after or before the condition clause. - I will give an example on my own " If I had a million dollars, I would not take CELTA course" to familiarize them with the negative form. - I will continue the chain by writing that " If I did not take CELTA course, I would not be a teacher" "If I were not a teacher, I would be a businesswoman" " If I were a businesswoman, I would earn a lot of money" " If I earned a lot of money, I'd travel to many countries" (chain activity)

Clarifying the target language (5-8 minutes) • To -clarify the meaning of the target language - model and provide controlled practice of pronunciation - highlight the form

- I will ask CCQs to check they understand the meaning of the new form. " Am I talking about the past, present or future?" " Have I had a million dollars? " " Is it real or unreal situation" "is the situation of if clause real or unreal?" " Is the situation of the result clause real or unreal?" - I will drill the sentence with the students and they repeat after me first and let them read on their own

Language practice (6-15 minutes) • To provide controlled practice and written practice of the second conditional senetence

- I will ask the students to do a chain consequences "three sentences" with a time limit 2 minutes and they will work individually. - I will collect the papers from them. and make a delayed feedback at the end of the lesson - I will give the students a questionnaire taken from "busyteacher.org" website with the title " you and money" to discover their attitude to money. -I will ask the students to work on the questionnaire, first read each question - Then choose the answer that is nearest to how they feel. -They will work on it individually for 6 minutes. - I will divide them into different pairs to take turns and ask each other the questions in the questionnaire. then compare answers and give reasons for their answers. - I will write on board the points for each answer and ask them to calculate their scores - Then I will give them a paper with the explanation to different scores

Feedback (3-5 minutes) • To establish correct answers and deal with learners' mistakes and errors

-I will work on the students' written sentences - I will write the incorrect sentences and ask them to find out what is wrong in these sentences. - If they do not know to identify the mistake, I will give them a clue to help them to look and locate where is the incorrect part and then make it correct -I will deal with the students' mistakes of the questionnaire activity while they speak to each other as well.
