Description

In this lesson, I am going to present grammar (was/were) through the medium of reading and listening, trying to have s-s interaction by speaking activities that follow.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of simple past tense (was/were) in the context of family

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about birthday in the context of family

Procedure

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Some personal questions about their birthday would be asked (if my partner doesn't ask similar questions of course) They circle was/ were in the text.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language
Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Concentrating on these 3 sentences, I am going to ask them to change the sentences into negative; y/n question forms. Such as: -I was born in 1984. (negative)/ (y/n) -My birthday party was interesting. (negative)/ (y/n) -There were 15 people at the party. (negative)/ (y/n)

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

ex. 4 is given to them. Look at ex. 3.a and highlight "was/ wasn't/ were/weren't" Do 4b in pairs. Play audio track 6.1. check answers. (Write the answers on the board/ provide a PPT) Give them the extra activity explanation page. Do ex 5. Underline the correct verbs.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Do 6.a) Read the text again quickly and answer the questions. skimming Do 6.b) reading for details. Answer the following questions: 1. When was Margaret's 13th Bday? 2. Where was the party? 3. Was the weather good? 4. What food was there? 5. Were her friends at her party? 6. How many people were at here party? Do ex. 7. A) Drill the verbs (strong and weak forms).

Free Practice (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Provide some papers on each a topic is written related to birthday. They are supposed to talk about their last imaginary birthday using the TL: - an interesting birthday - a lovely birthday - a strange birthday After they finish their stories, some students report their stories to class.

lead-in (2-6 minutes) • to add interest to the material

The picture of Helen's family is shown in PTT with some questions. 1. Was it Helen’s birthday? 2. Was it Margaret’s birthday? 3. Whose birthday was it yesterday? 4. Were there 14 people at the party? 5. Were there 40 people at the party? 6. Was the party boring/ interesting? 7. Who wasn’t at the party? Work in pairs and answer them
