Description

In this lesson, students will be able to read for the general idea followed by reading for detail to test their comprehension of the reading passage. Then they will have the chance to relate the text to them through a speaking activity

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about Interview with Carlos Acosta in the context of Personal qualities

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of Personal qualities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- I will show the students a video about the ballet dancer Carlos Acosta -I will ask them about what kind of art is it? try to elicit ballet dancing - I will show them a picture of Carlos Acosta and ask them these dew questions - Who is this person? - What does he do?

Pre-teach Vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible by letting them know the meaning of the blocking vocabulary

-I will ask students to work in pairs and match the new vocabulary with the possible meaning - When they finish I will ask them to check the other students' work and if they could find something different and which version is correct. After that, I will give them a handout with the answer key to check their answers.

While-Reading-- reading for gist (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist a reading task to skim the passage quickly

- I will give a student one minute to read quickly and decide what could be the best title for the reading passage. - They will work individually, I will highlight the fact that they do not need to read everything, just the first sentence of each paragraph. or I could make it easier and ask them to read only the first part quickly to decide. - I will ask them to check their answers in pairs -I will ask about what is the correct answer and give feedback.

While-Reading- reading for details (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading tasks to check their comprehension

- I will ask the students to read the interview again and find four facts about Carlos's life and two of his opinions -They will work individually for 5 minutes. - When they finish, I will ask them to check their answers in pairs, then I will check the answers they have and give feedback

Post-Reading- Speaking activity (10-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-I will ask students to use a paper and pen - I will ask students to complete sentences from the interview so they're true for them - I will give them a demo " I phrase I use too often is, no way" and they will do that individually for 6 minutes. - I will ask them to switch papers with their partner and use their partner phrases and make questions, and the partner will answer and then switch roles interviewing each other. - I will monitor their performance and then take notes of some mistakes - I will present the mistakes on board and ask them " what do they think about these sentences? -Listen to their corrections and if they did not find the wrong part I could highlight it to let them think about it.
