Nothing Day
Elementary level
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide Ss with practice in reading & listening for gist, specific information and detail in the context of Nothing Day
Subsidiary Aims
-
To give Ss practice in speaking for fluency in the context of creating new holidays
Procedure (37-45 minutes)
Show a picture of a person doing nothing. Elicit the word 'nothing' by asking 'What is he doing?' Write on the w/b 'Is it good or bad to do nothing?' Ss discuss in pairs.
Write 'Nothing Day' on the board. Ask 'What do you think people do on Nothing Day?' Elicit some ideas. (Mime some actions if they can't get started) Write them on the w/b. Ask Ss to discuss in pairs what people can do on Nothing Day.
Tell Ss to read the article from HO1 quickly and match the questions with the answers. Play Track 1.63 (which has the answers) and Ss check. Ensure that Ss heard the answers. Check in pairs. If there is S who finished earlier, ask him to write his answers on the w/b. Ss compare their answers.
Tell Ss to read again and decide which sentences are true or false and correct the false ones (HO1 ex.3). Individual work. Peer-checking. Whole-class feedback.
Tell Ss to find in the article and underline all the time words with 'in' 'on' or 'at', then draw and fill in the table like in the presentation. Ss work in pairs. Then 3 Ss fill in that chart on the w/b. Summerise together which concepts go with in/on/at (time of day/seasons/dates). Tell Ss to complete the sentences in ex.1 from HO2 individually. Talk in pairs, share your sentences.
Brainstorm with Ss what other interesting holidays could be created (e.g. Be Nice Day, Help Your Parents Day, Work Longer Day). Ss work in pairs, they must decide on 3 new different holidays and what people do on those days. Give an example (These questions can help: What do people do on this day? Why is this day special? What is the name of your special day? When is it?). Then Ss mingle and tell about their holidays to the others.
If time - Get Ss to plan a timetable for Nothing Day. (E.g. 12 o'clock - get up, 1 o'clock - sit in a park). They write down their plans and share it while mingling.
