Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about fears and phobias in the context of living in fear

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of clarify some word forms of nouns, adj, negative adj, in the context of fear and phobia in the context of fears and phobias

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will introduce the word fear through visuals of a girl and a tall building. I elicit the word fear by showing students that my friend is stressful because she needs to go up the building. After eliciting, I will ask students to discuss with their partners: Do you have any fears? Do you know anyone who has any fears? Students can use the ideas that are on the board.

Pre-Reading (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text content

-Provide students with the ex.1 reading questions. -Tell them to fold the paper -show them that they need to discuss these questions in pair. -whole class feedback

While-Reading/gist (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with gist comprehension of the reading text

1. -Show students they need to read the text individually in 2 minutes -Then show students answer the questions that we did before the reading. -PW Check -provide answers 2. -show students they need to match the questions. -pw check -pick 5 random people and ask them to come to the board and stick the answers

While-Reading/comprehension (7-10 minutes) • to provide students with detailed comprehension of the reading text

- tell students to read the reading text again for 2 minutes. - show them to do ex. 3 in pairs - provide answers

focus on vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • to provide prefix and suffix vocabulary from the reading text

-tell students to complete the vocab. chart in pairs -provide WC feedback

controlled practice of vocabulary (4-6 minutes) • to practise the vocabulary from ex.1

-show students that they need to fill the blanks with the vocabulary from the previous exercise in pairs. - WC feedback

freer practice (1-4 minutes) • to ensure that they use the introduced vocabulary in a productive context.

- show students that they have 1 minute to fill the blanks with the words that are true for them. - elicit WC feedback
