TP3 - Reading
Intermediate level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about decluttering in the context of their life
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide practice of phrasal verbs in the context of decluttering their life by paying attention to their meaning, form, and pronunciation, and after that, to practice using them in a freer conversation exercise
Procedure (22-55 minutes)
to activate students background knowledge of the topic: - showing them a picture of "rubbish" and asking these questions: "what's this?" "is this a problem in your city?" - then showing them a picture of "clutter" and ask them: " is this rubbish too?" - asking students to talk to their partners about what they can see in the picture, and whether or not it is a problem in their homes as well. - checking with the class.
- pre-teaching vocabulary (clutter, rubbish, stuff) through a matching exercise - while students are working, writing the words under the vocabulary title on the right side of the board - checking the meaning using a PPT slide on the board. - checking the pronunciation through modeling with students - showing the slide of "declutter your life!" to the students to clarify the meaning of "declutter" and adding it to the list by the opposite sign in front of the word "clutter"
- Reading for gist: Ss will read the text to understand the whole idea and find some view points on the question of "what could be the benefits of decluttering?". Then they will have time to discuss it in pairs. Feedback from some groups will be checked.
- Reading for specific information: Ss will be regrouped in groups of 4. A HO will be given to them, and they need to read the article again together to find and match the name of some people from the text and some sentences mentioning their believes. Feedback will be checked on the board.
- In their new groups, students will discuss the question "what do you think about each of these opinions?" - The feedback will be checked with this question: "what does ....... think about sentence 2?"
